EO is a great place to work. There is a definite culture to EO, you feel like you are part of a family and that what you do has a direct effect on the success of the company.
I joined the Edmund Optics team in 1997 as an Application Engineer, where I answered technical calls from our customers. Constantly faced with new challenges, I learned from my fellow engineers, asked a lot of questions, and consistently expanded my knowledge. I spent several years getting a very broad exposure to many parts of the company, working for Quality Assurance (QA), Manufacturing, and Sales.
In 2000, I was given the opportunity to go into Project Management, working on some large custom assembly jobs. At this time, I went to New Jersey Institute of Technology (main campus located in Newark, New Jersey) for my graduate certificate in Project Management. This position kept my hands in a wide variety of engineering disciplines but I was still able to interact with the customer and their application.
By 2001, EO had started a custom products group, who handled all the feasibility, quoting, and manufacturing issues that were associated with the expanding custom business. With my experience and qualification, I became manager of this group, in 2002.
In 2004, EO started to change the focus of our design centers to better support our new product development and manufacturing of custom products, such as aspheres; with my background and knowledge, I transitioned into the role of Director of Design in the company's Tucson, AZ office. This position put me in direct management of the designers in Tucson, as well as, indirectly with our global designers. Since moving to Arizona, I created a more customer-focused design team that has a strong emphasis on manufacturability. I traveled the world to visit our customers, manufacturing sites, and sister design center in Shenzhen, China to gain a better knowledge of what EO's designers, manufacturers, and most importantly the customers need. Additionally, I work very closely with the University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona and the recruitment of new engineers from their Optical Science Center.
Over the last couple years, I have concentrated on applying my skills and knowledge to work directly with our customers and to mentor our new engineers, which has led me to transition into the role of Principal Engineer. I enjoy helping to grow our engineering ranks and working with our new sales engineering staff. I also like being a technical resource that our customers can trust, both through writing articles and customer visits.
I first chose EO because of the people. When I came down from the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York to interview, I was impressed by the family atmosphere and the close relationship everyone had. In addition, EO's ability to deliver opportunities has impressed me. As a company, our engineers have always been given work to help further their career goals. All of the opportunities I have been given and the atmosphere that Edmund Optics puts forward has made me a loyal EO employee.
Jeremy Govier is the Principal Engineer at Edmund Optics' Tucson, AZ, USA office. He is responsible for technical feasibility of designs and engineering support for Sales, in addition, to being a technical lead on various projects, including aspheric lens design. Jeremy previously held positions as Application Engineer and Manager of Custom Product Group in Barrington, NJ, USA and Director of Design in Tucson, AZ, USA. He holds a graduate certificate in Project Management from the New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark, New Jersey, USA and a B.S. in Optics from The Optics Institute at the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York, USA.
My Biggest Accomplishment
I think my biggest accomplishment was helping grow our custom business from start-up to 30% of our global sales.
